A Gift for Gentiles from the Jews - the word of G-d.
From the Chofetz Chaim on the pasuk "Ach sheker nahalu
avotenu" in Haftara Behukotai from Lekach Tov (Beit Midrash
Tov), on Behukotai, 5760
One winter night, a wagon driver was once traveling, when he decided to stop at an inn to escape the cold. As he sat and drank wine, beer and liquor, snow fell, covering the roads. After one too many drinks he took to the road although it was still night. He sat in his wagon and the horse itself rode through the snow in the direction it wanted.
Before dawn, many other wagon drivers staying at that inn, also took to the road. They wanted to reach the city. They saw the tracks in the snow that the first wagon driver made. They assumed that that was the path to the city. No one suspected that the path before them was made by an inebriated driver. However, when the light came they found out that that the tracks didn't lead them to the city and that it was not the proper path.
Do we also sometimes fall into the same predicament? We follow a path because it was laid before us, without reflecting whether it leads to the proper destination.
About 3,500 years ago at Mt. Sinai, the Torah was given by G-d to The Jews.
There were millions of witnesses to this event.
(This is a major difference between Judaism and other
religions. No religion besides Judaism can claim that G-d
appeared to all of the members of their religion at one point in
time. Other religions may claim that only the
"founders" of their religions were privy to a prophesy
to start their religion. This cannot be compared to a testimony
of millions of witnesses. G-d never appeared to any other nation
again afterwards - thus he never "exchanged" His
chosen people for another people.)
G-d gave commandments to the Jewish people and He also gave them 7 laws for all the rest of the nations to
follow (without need to convert to Judaism).
These are the same laws that were accepted by the entire human race before the Jews accepted the Torah. They are called the Seven Noahide laws. They are the following:
1. Do Not Kill
2. Do Not Steal
3. Do Not Commit Adultery
4. Do Not Eat from a living animal
5. Do Not Commit Idolatry
6. Do Not Blaspheme
7. Establish a System of Justice
Following these laws not only give a person a proper framework for living well, but also a more meaningful
existence, by knowing one is following the will of G-d. They
also provide pleasure by learning them.
These Seven laws enable a Gentile (a child of Noah) who follows them to merit entering Heaven after death.
One can learn about the details of these Seven Noahide laws and learn how to gain entrance to Heaven.
The description on the back of this book reads:
"The Path of the Righteous Gentile introduces the reader to the most ancient of doctrines, the Seven Universal Laws, originally given to Adam, the first man. These earliest teachings of G-d are a spiritual treasure waiting to be discovered by all who will listen and learn."
Quotes:
"This could be the most important book that
a gentile searching for the truth reads in his or her life. It
provides one with meaning, a purpose and a way to live life
better."
